What Is CPG Photography and Why Does It Matter for Your Brand?
CPG stands for consumer packaged goods. It covers everything sold in packaging directly to consumers. Food, beverages, supplements, cosmetics, seasonings, snacks. If it ships to someone's door or sits on a shelf, it's CPG.
I pay attention to this stuff. I buy products with intention and I notice what makes me reach for something. Cowboy Colostrum. Prima bars. Clean, simple images that make you want to try something before you've read a single word on the label. You don't always know why you want it. The photo is doing that work quietly.
That's what good CPG photography does. It makes people want your product before they even understand it.
Here's what I see separating the images that sell from the ones that don't.
Lighting. Bad lighting makes products look dull and lifeless. Good lighting makes a jar look almost three dimensional. It makes a can look like something you need on your counter. I have seen products stop people mid scroll simply because the light was right. That is not an accident.
Too much going on. There is a tendency to add too much. Props, surfaces, ingredients, and backgrounds all competing for attention until the product disappears into the noise. That devalues the work that went into making it. The best CPG photography is a balance. Sometimes a single lemon twist is all you need to make a beverage come alive. I will always lean toward simplicity over accidentally adding too much.
Context sells. A cookie brand does not just need a clean studio shot. It needs a milk dunk. A stop motion of a bite. Something that puts the product in the moment it was made for. That context connects the consumer to the experience before they have even opened the package.
Mad Lad Visuals works with food and beverage businesses and product brands throughout Sacramento and beyond. Every image is retouched by hand. No AI. No shortcuts.
