What to Wear to a Headshot Session
Every client asks me this before their session. Here's what I tell them.
Solid colors. Well-fitted clothing. Nothing that competes with your face.
Blues, greens, grays, black, and earth tones tend to photograph well for most people and work across a variety of backgrounds.
Busy patterns, bold logos, and bright graphics pull attention away from you. That's the opposite of what a headshot is supposed to do. A clean solid color keeps the focus where it belongs.
Bring two or three options. You won't know which one photographs best until you're in front of the camera. Having choices gives you variety without turning the session into a wardrobe shoot.
Fit matters more than style. Something that fits well in a solid color will outperform something trendy that doesn't sit right. Wear what you'd wear to an important meeting. Not your most formal outfit, not your most casual one. The version of you that means business.
A few things to avoid. Thin stripes and small patterns create a visual effect on camera that looks nothing like they do in person. Logos and branded clothing pull focus. Anything that needs constant adjusting will show up in your expression.
For team sessions, coordinate without matching. Everyone in the same color family reads as cohesive. Everyone in identical outfits reads as a uniform.
If you're adding hair and makeup through our HMUA, arrive with your normal makeup already applied. She'll refine, touch up, and maintain your look throughout the shoot.
